About Opoku Ware Senior High School
Opoku Ware School, originally called the Yaa Asantewaa College, was established by the Gold Coast Government at the request of the Catholic Church in Ashanti Region to cater for boys’ education, as an alternative to travelling to St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast. In February 1952, Rev. Fr. Peter Burgess, conducted interviews and admitted 60 boys into the school at Santasi. He devised a system of identification in numbers which is still in use, with the first batch being numbered K1 to K60. Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II changed the name to Opoku Ware, believing it is an anomaly for a boys’ school to bear a female name.
