When do schools in Ghana re-open?
The key academic calendar dates for high schools in Ghana are usually only announced shortly before the school year begins.
The academic calendar is different for Ghana Senior High Schools, Ghana Junior High Schools, and Ghana Primary Schools.
For Senior High Schools, the calendar is even more complex: The academic calendar, thus the re-opening and semester recess calendar, in Ghana Senior High Schools depends on whether the selected Senior High School is a “Single Track SHS” or a “Double Track SHS”. For “Double Track SHS”, students can be on the “Gold Track” or the “Green Track”.
School opening periods for all types of Ghana High Schools are shown below.
First Term:
3rd October – 22nd December 2023
Break:
23rd December 2023 – 8th January 2024
Second Term:
9th January – 11th April 2024
Break:
12th April – 29th April 2024
Third Term:
30th April – 25th July 2024
For Single Track Senior High Schools the academic semester is the following:
SHS 1 Students:
- 4th December 2023 – 5th March 2024
- 13th May – 9th July 2024
- 3rd September – 15th November 2024
SHS 2 Students:
- 8th March – 9th May 2024
- 12th July – 15th November 2024
SHS 3 Students:
- 3rd January – 28th March 2024
- 17th April – End of WASSCE 2024 (23rd August 2024)
There will be no Double Track for grade level, however, only a two-year group of the three cohorts of students will be in school at any time in 2024. Please use the single-track calendar as a result for your reference.
