When do schools in Ghana re-open?
The key academic calendar dates for high schools in Ghana are usually only announced shortly before the school year begins.
The academic calendar is different for Ghana Senior High Schools, Ghana Junior High Schools, and Ghana Primary Schools.
For Senior High Schools, the calendar is even more complex: The academic calendar, thus the re-opening and semester recess calendar, in Ghana Senior High Schools depends on whether the selected Senior High School is a “Single Track SHS” or a “Double Track SHS”. For “Double Track SHS”, students can be on the “Gold Track” or the “Green Track”.
School opening periods for all types of Ghana High Schools are shown below.
First Term:
2nd September, 2025 – 18th December, 2025 (15 weeks)
Break:
19th December, 2025 – 7th January, 2026
Second Term:
8th January, 2026 – 1st April, 2026 (12 weeks)
Break:
2nd April, 2026 – 20th April, 2026
Third Term:
21st April, 2026 – 23rd July, 2026 (13 weeks)
For Single Track Senior High Schools the academic semester is the following:
SHS 1 Students
- 18th October, 2025 – 27th February, 2026 (17 weeks) (
- 4th May, 2026 – 21st August, 2026 (16 weeks)
SHS 2 Students:
- 18th October, 2025 – 27th February, 2026 (17 weeks)
- 4th May 2026 – 21st August, 2026 (16 weeks)
SHS 3 Students:
- 11th October, 2025 – 27th February 2026 (18 weeks)
- 13th March, 2026 – 21st June 2026 (14 weeks, End of WASSCE)
For Double Track Senior High Schools (Transitional Calender) the academic semester is the following:
SHS 1 Students
- 18th October, 2025 – 30th January, 2026 (9 weeks onsite, 4 weeks offsite)
- 16th March, 2026 – 12th June, 2026 (9 weeks onsite, 4 weeks offsite)
- 3rd July, 2026 – 4th September, 2026 (9 weeks)
SHS 2 Students:
- 5th January, 2026 – 17th April, 2026 (10 weeks onsite, 5 weeks offsite)
- 18th May 2026 – 4th September, 2026 (16 weeks)
SHS 3 Students:
27th October, 2025 – 13th February, 2026 (14 weeks)
14th February, 2026 – 21st June 2026 (18 weeks)
