The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instructed students to stay away from the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School following the collapse of a nearby unfinished building, which killed three people and injured 20 others. GES Director-General, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, said an emergency meeting will be held to decide the next steps and stressed that students should not return until all school structures are deemed safe.
The collapse occurred on Sunday, 29 March 2026, during a worship gathering at a four-storey building reportedly used as a makeshift church. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly, rescuing 20 people from the debris, including minors, while three fatalities were confirmed and handed over to the police.
The incident has sparked urgent safety assessments of school infrastructure in the area to prevent similar tragedies.
