A revised national curriculum developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) will introduce thirteen subject areas aimed at strengthening foundational learning and equipping pupils with 21st-century skills, values, and ethics in Ghana’s basic education system.
The curriculum, covering Kindergarten to Primary Six, includes subjects such as Ghanaian Language, English, Chinese, Arabic, French, Mathematics, Science (with Agriculture), Computing, Citizenship Education, Creative Arts, and Physical Education and Health.
Presented to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the new curriculum is designed to address learning gaps, reduce subject overload, and align education with national priorities. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has been tasked to review it for full implementation.
Key changes include the reintroduction of Citizenship Education, integration of Agriculture into Science, and the inclusion of computational thinking in Mathematics and Computing. Foreign languages, including Chinese, will now be introduced from Primary One, with Chinese offered as an optional subject.
The curriculum also emphasizes task-based, formative assessment and embeds ethics and values into teaching. Additionally, Ghanaian languages will be used as the medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Basic Three, with English taught as a subject to strengthen early literacy.
The reform aims to develop responsible, ethical, and globally competitive learners equipped with problem-solving skills.
