The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) published the provisional results of candidates who sat the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for both School and Private Candidates in 2024.
According to a statement made by WAEC on October 19, the Council will send school candidates’ results to their respective schools via the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Directors of Education. The Council stated that it found malpractices during the procedure.
Following an investigation, the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee accepted the annulment of subject results for 377 school candidates and three private candidates at its 35th meeting on October 16, 2024.
These candidates were found guilty of bringing foreign materials into the exam room or collaborating with others during the exam. Furthermore, 41 school candidates’ and one private candidate’s whole results were canceled. Additionally, because more research is being done on the inconsistencies, the results of 33 school candidates and three private candidates have been withheld.
Additionally, WAEC claimed that 149 schools had some of their subject results withheld because of alleged malpractices. According to the Council, these findings could be canceled or made public based on how the investigations turn out.
In general, 569,236 candidates from 19,505 schools registered for the school test, including 282,703 males and 286,533 females. This comprises 263 candidates with hearing impairments, 161 candidates with other special accommodations, and 59 candidates with vision impairments. 3,845 candidates were recorded as absent from the exam, which was administered at 2,123 locations around the country.
